Cozaar prescription: This drug is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes. It is also used to lower the risk of strokes in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. This drug works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing blood vessels, causing them to widen. High blood pressure reduction helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. You may take this drug with or without food. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. Do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. This medicine can raise your potassium levels, which rarely can cause serious side effects such as muscle weakness or very slow heartbeats. Tell your doctor immediately if these effects occur.

Cozaar works by preventing the action of a hormone called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to narrow, and leads to production of another hormone called aldosterone (which increases the amount of fluid in the blood). The action of Cozaar results in widening of blood vessels and reduction of fluid in the blood, and therefore brings about a reduction in blood pressure.
