Nolvadex prescription: Tamoxifen (tam-ox-i-fen) is a medicine that is used for the treatment of breast cancer and endometrial (en-do-me-tre-al) cancer. In breast cancer tamoxifen stops oestrogen (a female hormone) from working in the breast tissue, this is called an 'anti-oestrogen effect', which reduces the stimulation of breast cancer growth from the oestrogen in the body. Tamoxifen is not a steroid. Sometimes tamoxifen is used alone, other times it is used along with other medicines.

Many breast cancers need the hormone oestrogen to grow. Some of these breast cancers are 'oestrogen receptor positive' which means the cancer cells contain oestrogen receptors. Nolvadex works by preventing oestrogen from binding to these receptors. This blocks the action of oestrogen on cancer cells which may in turn cause some breast cancer tumours to shrink.
Nolvadex is also sometimes used to treat infertility, by encouraging the release of an egg.
