Protonix prescription: Although pantoprazole is approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), like other PPI''s it also is used for treating ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, and the Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Pantoprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Other drugs in the same class include lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec) and rabeprazole (Aciphex). Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome that are caused by stomach acid. Pantoprazole, like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal.

Protonix is used to treat certain conditions caused by too much acid being produced in the stomach, such as; stomach ulcers (gastric ulcers), ulcers of the upper part of the intestine (duodenal ulcers),and reflux oesophagitis (acid reflux or heartburn).
Protonix can also be used to treat irritation and ulceration of the stomach caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Acid is produced naturally in the stomach to help digest food. Excessive amounts of acid can irritate the stomach lining, causing inflammation, ulcers and other conditions. Protonix works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, relieving pain and helping to repair the damage.
