Zovirax prescription: This drug is used in certain patients to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex on the skin (mouth, lips, genitals, anus), outbreaks of shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox. The viruses that cause these infections are similar. They live in the body quietly until an outbreak is triggered. Acyclovir is not a cure for the infections, but treatment of an outbreak can speed up healing of the sores, decrease pain, and lower the risk of complications from the virus (e.g., whole body infection, brain infection, persistent pain after sore healing). OTHER USES: This medication may also be used to help prevent outbreaks of herpes and shingles in patients with frequent outbreaks.

Zovirax (Acyclovir) is used to treat the symptoms of infections caused by the herpes virus, such as genital herpes. As well, it is used to prevent infections from coming back. It is also used to treat varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles).
Zovirax (Acyclovir) does not cure genital herpes infections. Zovirax (Acyclovir) helps relieve symptoms of genital herpes, such as pain and itching, helps sores to heal more quickly and prevents new ones from forming. For shingles, Zovirax (Acyclovir) should be started within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash in order for it to work. Zovirax (Acyclovir) will not prevent postherpetic neuralgias.
